The most exciting period in American History.Dec 31, 2010
By J. Guild The 19th Century was the period when America found itself, and through great turmoil, found its way to become the greatest country the world has ever seen.It was not an easy time taking the founding principles of Life,Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness;and enacting them, particularly west of the Mississippi. The Revolutionary War was over, and now it took The Civil War to make the country into the United States. The Old West is covered in history books, movies, and every type of media. The "history" is filled with fact, fiction and legend.Sorting it all out is virtually impossible;but this book is an excellent reference, written by one of the best author/historians to turn to for the facts. The book is fairly small, but has 320 pages, loaded with facts, pictures and illustrations. It covers just about everything from the major people involved, the Military, the Gunfighters,Lawmen,Indians,Ranchers,Artists,Movies,Books,Tools and Weapons,Battles, and just about anything you want to check out in studying the Old West or simply reading about it. I read a lot about the Old West and Westerns;and I intend to keep this book handy as a quick reference. Anyone who wants to sort out fact from fiction will find this a valuable reference.
