The 448-page book is presented chronologically, starting before the founding of the United States, through the political and military combat of the Civil War, to the effects and consequences felt 150 years later. Written by noted scholars, the Civil War Chronicle offers: - A foreword by William C. Davis, an award-winning writer, editor, lecturer, and consultant on the Civil War.
- An 800-item timeline marking significant events before, during, and after the Civil War, such as the legalization of slavery in the English colonies, the creation of the Underground Railroad, major battles like Antietam, and the passage of the Reconstruction Acts by Congress.
- Eight chapters of essays and first-person accounts that take the reader behind the battle lines, look at the important generals on both the Union and Rebel sides, examine the home fronts of the North and South, and analyze the political decisions and actions that affected the war effort.
- Essays that give readers a "big picture" perspective of each year of the Civil War, including the impact of the election of President Abraham Lincoln to the war's turning point at Gettysburg to Lincoln's assassination less than a week after the South surrendered at Appomattox.
- Information on important battles, events, and leaders, including Lincoln, Jefferson Davis, Ulysses S. Grant, and Robert E. Lee.
- Hundreds of photos and other artwork, many of which allow the reader to see how period photographers such as Mathew Brady captured the first modern war with their cameras.

This book is the kind of book you can pick up and put down when needed. Instead of it being really wordy, it covers the same amount of information with lots of historical photos and random facts. It still goes in chronological order though, so it's easy to follow.
